MEANT TO FADE ( GERMANY )
a group exhibition featuring artworks by Irish and German artists and precarious materials, from garlic peels to aquatic plants
co-curated by Katerina Gribkoff and Phoebe Tohl
Automat Artspace, Saarbrücken, Germany
part of Zeitgeist Irland 2024
September – October 2024
Meant to Fade was originally presented in Cork, Ireland in 2023. This second iteration of Meant to Fade presents the work of 6 artists based in Ireland and 3 German artists as part of the Zeitgeist Irland 2024 programme. Having crossed the sea, the works from Ireland carry the ingredients of the Irish landscape: the seaweeds of the coastlines, the pigments of the garden, and the blackberries of the hedges. The Germans artists bring spices, corn husks, living aquatic plants, flower pigments, and one chilli pepper to the space. Together these artists demonstrate, through their making practices and resulting work, an intentional materiality, an understanding of complexity, and a reverence for that which fades and shifts in tandem with nature.
Artists: Dearbhla Ryan, Christine Mackey, Christine Prescott, Joanna Hopkins, Julia Rabusai, Lucila Pacheco, Katerina Gribkoff, Naomi Liesenfeld, and Phoebe Tohl.
