Subjective Taxonomy: a quilted catalogue of garden and local plants using appliquéd patches and eco-prints.
This work was made as a kind of taxonomy, showing the different plants I grow for dye (left) and forage locally (right). The grid was painted onto up-cycled cotton with a thickened iron solution. The fabric was then dyed a deep rust colour with coreopsis flowers. I appliqued different cut patches and eco-prints onto the surface according to a subjective system based on my personal relationship with the dye garden plot and surrounding landscape.
Left side: weld, double black hollyhock, woad, indigo, madder, horehound, coreopsis, cosmos, scabiosa, and marigold.
Right side: butterfly bush, blackberry, bracken, hazel, sumac, rose leaves, nettle, and sloe berry.
