the garden as classroom

The dye garden has become a space for students to get their hands dirty, to involve themselves with the garden as a way to grow material, to unwind, or to become inspired. I have lectured for undergraduate and graduate classes, which often end in the garden, and having access to the beds and plants has prompted interesting conversations about topics ranging from soil health to seed ecology. Touching the plants and working in the garden space can provide the students with an opportunity to make tactile connections with place and other beings.
